Skies

Artist Statment

I often find myself taking dozens of pictures of the sky, even if it looks exactly the same as another picture I took about a week ago. A lot of media, from shows to video games, tend to have a fascination with using the sky as a setting, which, in turn, has driven my fascination with the sky. Thanks to my newfound appreciation for painting back in 2025, I found the courage to practice painting landscapes. I was slowly testing the waters with scenery that briefly included the sky on the last quarter of the canvas, waiting until I got a good handle on oil painting before jumping to the skies.

Skies is a series of three oil paintings for me to stretch my painting skills and to capture all the wildly different colors of the sky, whilst including fantasy/dream-like elements. I find that oil paint allows me to let go of my fear of coloring my art, and somehow visualize my environments better than I could on paper. It’s hard to describe the feeling I get when I see the sky from real life, or how skies are depicted in video games and animated shows. Maybe it gives me the feeling of “freeing.” The want to be there, to be up in clouds. To explore the skies that fantasy worlds have created. I believe that’s what it is; that’s what I want to capture within my own art and the stories I tell with it. From floating islands, to cotton candy sunsets, to water sitting above the sky. All three of those ideas came to mind, so with a combination of oil paints and oil fluid, and a ton of trial and error, I want to bring to life the skies I visualize in my head. To gain the skill to create something similar to those who made the sky so fascinating to me in the first place.
